Friction Testing To closely model the engine environment, a one-cam-lobdone-tappet apparatus was used. This previously-describedequipment5reproduced the valve mass, angular velocities, spring forces, dynamics, tappet bore dimensions, and oil temperature and flow in an engine. 6 Before use in these tests, the cam lobe (shown in Fig. 2a) had been run in for over 500 h.

INTRODUCTION The primary goal of this investigation is to evaluate the performance and advantages of using functionally graded 100% ceramic to 100% metal liners for gun barrels. This evaluation will involve microstructural characterization of the proposed functionally graded liner to steel substrate as a function of thermal and tribological tests in order to determine feasibility of application. Guns are critical components in the US Army's armament arena. Advanced armament requirements elicit stringent performance specifications on future weapon systems.

NUMERICAL EXAMPLES We consider a 4-point bending problem carried out on a composite beam made of BlackglasTM/ Nextel 5-harnesssatin weave. The fabric designs used 600 denier bundles of NextelTM312 fibers, spaced at 46 threads per inch, and surrounded by BlackglasTMmatrix material. The bundle is assumed to be linear elastic throughout the analysis. The average transversely isotropic elastic propeaies were computed by the Mori-Tanaka method. 26 . The microstructure of RVE is discretized with 6857 elements totaling 10608 degrees of freedom as shown in Figure 1.
