The passage from simple to complex is described usually in terms of the relationship of terms to propositions. Descartes, on the other hand, is concerned with the rigorous development of knowledge from its foundations, or the passage from elements to compounds. Even ‘not leaving anything out’ separates his undertaking from that of some branches of natural philosophy, in which nature is recognized to have residues and redundancies which would prevent its investigation in any formal mathematical way.
