21 In the case of stalking, the underlying desire is to be loved or accepted, the fantasy is of an intimate relationship with the person who might function as the object of this desire – one which usually modulates into a fantasy of revenge or punishment, once the possibility of the desired relationship is closed off – and the symptom is the actual stalking, the compulsive pattern of escalating behaviour.
