This is achieved by placing the light to the right or left of the object, causing the light to shine directly on the side of the object as the lighting diagram indicates in figure 2-10b. This technique is known as raking the light. This is beneficial when shooting a low-relief object requiring visible texture and shape. Lighting Direction Color and Surface Texture Perceived object color is not only a function of the fluctuation of the light wave, as discussed earlier in this chapter. Light intensity and polarized light will also affect how color saturation appears.
Using a fill light affects the light ratio; the greater the lighting ratio, the more dramatic the effects. Therefore, an open, brighter portrait would require a reduced lighting ratio. Conversely, a greater lighting ratio is required for a more dramatic effect (fig. 2-33, a and b). Broad and Short Lighting These two lighting techniques are similar in that the description on how to achieve the lighting is relative to the subject’s ear and the camera position as shown in figure 2-34, a and b. Figure 2-34a illustrates a broad lighting setup.
We see some illumination behind the object because of spillover from the soft box shining behind the object and illuminating the background material. The front of the black object has a subtle sheen to the leather and is reflecting the light, resulting in a slightly lighter tonal value. The top is receiving some light and is a darker tonal value than the front. The right side and the shadow area have lost all detail and appear as a black void in the image. Once again, because the background material has a slight sheen, it transitions from a dark gray to black as a result of the light reflecting off the surface.
