For example, while on the were worth the physical and organizational efforts, I became summit of Mount Hood accompanied by my good friend Brean RISK S A N D RE WA RDS Duncan, we had a summit moment. This is a time when all is still, no wind blows, no words are spoken, no one else is around and, most of all, our exhausted bodies get a moment to relax after a strenuous ascent. Brean then decided to head out on an icy ridge to catch a view straight down the Pearly Gates. This was his personal adventure in a spectacular environment that was critical for him to fully experience the location.
I was photographing for my first book, Ski the Rockies, and explained to him my vision of capturing a view looking down on several skiers as they descended a large unskied glacier. To my surprise, he proceeded to ask me when I thought it would be best to use the helicopter for the shot. It was hard to breathe. In what seemed like two seconds later, I was in a Long Bell Jet Ranger flying up to the Vowell Glacier in the morning sun, accompanied by four of the greatest skiers in Canada (the lodge chef, two dishwashers, and one guide).
Moreover, what these activities have done for me has become critical in my photographic development. I have learned the difference between observation and participation.
